What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen therapy can be described as a blend of osteopathy, acupressure, and rolling massage. It is a manual therapy used to relieve pain and restore joint mobility. Similar to standard massage therapy, Bowen is also great for anxiety and relaxation.

FAQs

How does Bowen Therapy work?

Bowen therapy works targets both the muscular and neurological systems. The acupressure and rolling massage technique retrains the nerves that go to the muscles, to “reset” your baseline tension. When you have an injury, the body tightens around that muscle or joint to protect the area from further injury while it is healing. In time our bodies should return to baseline tension after we heal - but sometimes this protective guarding of the body continues past the healing stage and the tightness itself begins to cause pain and restriction in movement. This can start a cycle - pain causes tightness, then the tightness causes pain.

Bowen therapy breaks this cycle by targeting not just the muscles and tendons, but the nervous system as well.

What types of conditions can Bowen therapy be used for?

Bowen therapy can be used for any chronic pain condition - postural back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, or chronic stress/repetitive work injuries like carpal tunnel.

It can also be used to treat sports injuries like tendinitis, knee pain, ankle pain, or wrist/elbow pain. Additionally, Bowen can be used for headaches and TMJ as well.

Is Bowen therapy covered under insurance?

As the assessment and treatment is done under naturopathic care, it is billed as a naturopathic visit.

How many sessions are needed?

Similar to other manual therapies, repeated sessions are often necessary to achieve full results. Most patients will find relief after the first visit, with full recovery in 3-7 sessions.
